ONE TREND WE NOTICED EVERYWHERE DURING THE LAST S/S FASHION WEEK(S) WAS SUPER PREVALENT IN 2013, AND IT’S ONLY GETTING BIGGERâOR IN THIS CASE SMALLER. WE’RE TALKING ABOUT THE CROP TOP, OF COURSE, AND IN 2014, THE UPDATES ARE SUBTLE, BUT IMPORTANT TO NOTE: HERE’S THE NEW CROP OF CROPS YOU’LL WANT ONCE IT WARMS UP, AND WHY
The history of the crop reads like a pop culture almanac and has gone through considerable transformations since it was first admired on Brigitte Bardot and Barbara Eden in the 1960s. Popularized by Madonna in her 1980s “Lucky Star” video, the crop top has been re-imagined by everyone from Cher Horowitz to Princess Jasmine.
The crop top is back with a vengeance in the S/S ’14 shows in an array of different forms, cuts, textures, and materials. While it has maintained it’s original raciness as seen in Dolce & Gabbanna and then Sarah Burton’s S&M-inspired leather bralettes for Alexander McQueen, designers like Albert Kriemler and Guillame Henry have taken a more conservative approach, reconstructing the crop top into demure statement pieces for Akris and Carven respectively. Whether it’s the ensemble’s main attraction or concealed beneath loosely fitting jackets as shown in Acne and Vanessa Bruno, the crop top has been boldly revamped this season and is best worn with a smirk and a swagger.
